In this step, the teacher asks, or assigns, the class to find and list any evidence that is presented in the article or speech. To do this, she asks the class, “What has the author presented that would make us believe the claim?” (Note that in some cases, the author is the student himself or herself, and the claim being evaluated is the write-up of an experiment or project.)

The teacher may need to prompt students to identify all evidence presented and then select a few important items. Students will also need help refining long support statements into a short, concise statement of evidence. Over time, however, as students become more familiar with the process of identifying evidence that may be embedded in written text or speech, they should assume more responsibility for generating the evidence -- in other words, for figuring out what the author is really saying.
